Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine in which thin needles are inserted into specific points on the body. These points give the practitioners direct access to the tissues, blood vessels and nerves under the skin and help promote blood flow, healing and activation of the entire nervous system. When combined with chiropractic, these therapies can improve symptoms and jumpstart healing. Acupuncture can be used to treat many conditions including low back pain, sciatica, neck pain and tension, headaches, shoulder pain, knee pain, sinusitis and osteoarthritis.
In some cases, electrical stimulation of the needle may be used (electroacupuncture) by clipping cords to the end of the needle or by a handheld electric device. Different types and frequencies of electro-acupuncture are used to accomplish different therapeutic goals and will be applied by the practitioner. The electrical stimulation can further help activate the nervous system , relax tight musculature, strengthen weakened musculature and promote healing.
